9 Urban Biotopes

Project website with an interactive timeline

Industry: Arts & culture

9 Urban Biotopes was an international art project funded by the Culture Programme of the European Union. In it, nine art projects worked with local initiatives in seven cities: Berlin, Paris, London and Turin, and Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. We built the website on which the participants followed and documented their work on the ground. Visitors find their way around it on an interactive timeline.

Result

Participants maintain their content in shared Google Docs and Google Sheets. An interface written in Node.js reads the documents and puts each entry, with its text, photos and videos, in its place on the timeline. The website is always as current as the documents.

The seven cities sit above and below the timeline. The nine projects ran in three trialogues of three months each, three at a time, and the entries show videos from YouTube and Vimeo and photos from Flickr. The website is still online.
